    Must posses current Security Clearance with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)

    Comprehensive knowledge and experience in medium to large scale enterprise systems administration of Sun Solaris2.6 or above, and/or Hewlett Packard HP-UX 11.x or above, operating environment(s) and current OEM certified competence as a UNIX Systems Administrator from one or both vendor's.

    Current OEM certified competence as a Sidewinder Firewall Systems Administrator, version 5.x or above.

    Current certification as an information systems (IS) security professional by a widely recognized IS security accrediting organization (CSI or SANS).

    An advanced working knowledge of parameters, monitoring tools and utilities used to provide secure networked operation of UNIX environments.

    Advanced detailed knowledge of UNIX script programming and networking functions. Advanced working knowledge of state-of-the-art operating system patch management including, release monitoring, pre-installation impact analysis and patch deployment in a medium to large scale UNIX operating environment.

    Be aware of and understand IS risk assessment. Develop, and assist in the development of, IS security policies and procedures.

    Knowledge of the following is highly desired: client/server and web-based application architectures and development, Veritas NetBackup backup & recovery product, local and wide area network design and administration, trusted UNIX, and public key infrastructures (PKI).

    A working knowledge of the following for UNIX, is critical:

  • Troubleshooting failed patch installations.


  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network protocols, including TCP/IP addressing and sub-netting, UUCP, RPC, NIS, NIS+, and NFS.


  • Installing, configuring, and troubleshooting network firewalls.


  • Using operating system utilities, via command line and/or GUI, to configure, modify, and troubleshoot system configuration as related to security, such as wrappers and proxies.


  • Implementing, configuring, managing, and troubleshooting vendor, industry, and government supplied security tools and scripts.


  • The UNIX Security Administrator Duties Include:

    a. Administer Secure Computing Sidewinder family of hardware and software solutions.

    b. Develop utility routines such as wrappers and proxies utilizing Shell scripting, pearl, and C/C++ programming languages, installing and testing new operating system releases, analyzing the effectiveness of the UNIX operating system, and developing monitoring techniques to improve security.

    c. Provide support by developing and distributing written systems administration procedures for maintaining the reliability and integrity of the computer applications, software, and databases.

    d. Assist in developing and maintaining backup procedures and devise migration strategies for new complex systems.

    e. Perform periodic network scans, both internal and external, against hosts within the domain, using commercial-off-the-shelf products such as, but not limited to, Internet Intrusion Scan.

    f. Administer agency standardized automated systems for information assurance and vulnerability assessment to ensure timely compliance with security patch and configuration change directives.

    g. Perform systems access administrator duties such as creating new users and/or groups, set account and audit policies and user rights as required.

    h. Review event logs for proper format and errors.

    i. Detect and respond to unauthorized access attempts and intrusions, and develop incident response reports.

    j. Provide positive responses to Information Assurance Vulnerability Assessments (IAVA) documenting results in the VMS database within the timelines established by security protocols.
